GBH Afterschool

WHAT IS GIRL BE HEARD?
Girl Be Heard develops, amplifies, and celebrates the voices of young women through socially conscious theatre-making. Our after-school program is a weekly workshop for girls that aims to develop healthy, confident, and self-aware young women as artist-activitsts who are engaged in their schools and communities.

PROGRAM GOALS
• Empower girls to develop their voices through devising ensemble-based theatre, storytelling, spoken word, expression through movement and writing.
• Develop girls’ critical thinking skills, social justice perspective, sense of co-responsibility, individual creative identity and artistic skills.
• Create a safe community where girls can connect with one another and with themselves.
• Foster the development of activist artists by connecting individual struggles to larger systemic problems, and providing tools to think globally and take action locally.

WHAT THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM PROVIDES
• Development of creative voice and communication skills through theatre, writing, and movement.
• A safe space within the school facility, for girls who want to creatively address the issues they are worried about and learn how to artistically express their opinions.
• Opportunities for girls to connect with a broader community of positive, powerful young women through external Girl Be Heard activities.
• Healthy snacks.
• Opportunities for travel and paid performance opportunities upon completion of program.
