November 2, 2019 Why do I do it?

Studio Simpatico

Hello GBH Family!

As the Artistic Director of Girl Be Heard, I wanted to share a bit about why I do what I do, and to ask you to join me in supporting Girl Be Heard.

As a young girl growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was a book, The Miracle Worker, about the life of Helen Keller, that put me on the road to helping girls develop their voice. Anne Sullivan, Helen’s teacher, had patience, love, and an unwavering belief in her work and in Helen. I know how she felt. As Artistic Director, I help youth voices flourish so they can be heard at high visibility platforms like The Nobel Women’s Initiative and the United Nations. With these performances, we expose our participants to issues that affect women and girls locally and globally, and allow them to be their own best advocates.

I am a better person because of the small part I play in the lives of these future leaders. They find a way when I think there is no way. They insist on being heard at a time when the voices of women and girls are being challenged. They give me hope when I am feeling hopeless.

They want to lead. At Girl Be Heard, we tell them that they can.

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement and this could not be a better time to empower a young woman’s voice. The future is hopeful. The future is bright. The future is female and this is #WhyICelebrate.

On Wednesday, November 13th, Girl Be Heard will hold our annual Gala. Please support this incredible work by donating to GBH’s Gala Campaign to help us reach our goal, or buy a ticket to attend. 100% of the funds raised through the gala will go toward our work. Thank you for helping us get there.

Warmly,

Kim Sykes
Girl Be Heard Artistic Director
